More 1st Life.. In some places they want to keep the people sick

While in Tunisia I made two stops to discuss and just to try to raise awareness about an International Paired Kidney Exchange Database.

The first was  a hospital called  “Clinique Avicenne” where  I had the chance to talk to their equivalent of  a Nephrologist.  He is excited about the idea and does know of programs in effect in Europe but with Tunisia being a country with a relatively small population the idea has never really been put forth there.  “An international database would give  life saving opportunities to their people that they never would have otherwise” he told me.

After my visit at Clinique Avicenne we then went to a dialysis care giver in Sousse about 140 Kilometers south of Tunis.  There I spoke individually with  a few people who were going in for treatment and some during thier treatment about the possibillity of a international paired exchange database and what it involves..  These people had not even heard about this possiblity and once they understood I could see thier eyes light up with hope.  One of the nurses went to the man who seemed to be the director of the clinic and spoke to him in french about what I was there telling them and he promptly escorted me out of the clinic and told me outside that they didnt want american solutions to dialysis here simply because of these people did not need dialysis this clinic would not exist and people who worked  there would not have jobs to feed thier families!

When I left there I thought about the hope in those peoples eyes.  But a tear came to mine when I thought about the uphill battle this could be in some places.

Time Traveler?

Was about to get to sleep and I saw this video..  what do you think?

A quick story from Morocco. Two lives changing.

Im Trying to save my stories of this trip I am currently on for a little book I want to (self)  publish full of pictures and stories of my adventures that I can hopefully use to raise awareness about Paired Kidney Donor Exchange.. but I just have to share this one with you…

Early Saturday Morning here in Casablanca  I got up and went to the airport to use the internet connection inside the private ( soon to be used for an air Charter service) airplane that we are using for this trip.  I had made arrangements for the 15 year old boy “Circo” who we met earlier the day before to sort of stand guard near the airplane for me while I was in it since it would be about 3AM while I was there  (yeah Friday night at The Pocket starts at 3AM Saturday in Morroco!)

Circo was waiting for me at the Airport and promptly stood guard as I asked him and all was good.  Then it began to rain and I saw him sitting on top of a step ladder with no umbrella .. getting wet so I told him to come on inside the cabin with me and stay out of the weather.  I plugged my laptop speakers in to the cabin system so he could hear (the Live Music coming from SL) too and I we talking.

Soon I found out that Circo is an orphan and is raising his 9 year old sister alone  the best he can.  I also found out that his dream is to be a pilot, and he had never been in the air in an airplane in his life.   Right then I knew that once my brother woke up I would ask him to come over and take this boy in the air and at least let him experience it for the first time.

Daylight came and and I sent Circo home and told him to come back with his sister if he wanted that I would make arrangements with my brother to meet him and take them up.  The smile on his face was literally from ear to ear.  For me it was a reward that I cannot explain but it made me feel soo good to be able to bring some joy to a kid who is having such a hard life.

Circo left and I went back to the hotel where I found my brother and his kids were just getting up. My brother agreed to go take them up we headed back for the airport right after breakfast.

My brother and I are  always at odds and complete opposites when it comes to money and  … well the whole issue of capatalisim as a whole.  I have always been very peace-love-share- the- wealth,  everyone should live equally no one should go hungry in this world type of person and my brother has always been about making money,  your playing the cards your dealt so live with it for the people who cant make it for  themselves type thinking. (he did donate a kidney for me though)

One of my goals when I agreed to come on this trip was to spend some time trying to raise awaress about Medical issues  surrounding paired kidney exchange and an international database around the world and to show my brother how rewarding it can be to help others and stop thinking about yourself for a while.  Hoping that leading by example he might pick up on it by the end of a couple of months with me.

Circo and his little sister and my brother and me and the kids went up thru the clouds on this rainy morning.  My brother let Circo sit in the right seat and take the controls for about 20  minuets.

Circo’s smile and joy got to my brother.  When we landed he asked me to stay with the kids and he took Circo somewhere with him.  When they came back  it was announced that Circos full flying lessons and ground schooling and exams were pre paid for by my brother.

Circos dream of becoming a pilot can now come true.. his life has changed.  he can take his time studying he still has a few years before he is old enough to get his licence but he can start now.

My brother found out the joy of helping out others.  His life is also changed.

Peace.. Denise W.

I will have pictures of Circo and his ear to ear smile in the book. The pictures in this post are just from google.

Is this really how Aussie Men Speak?

I’ll be in Austrialia towards the end of Nov, 2010.. was just wondering…

Dexter Morph Ihnen ~ Timeless

A while back I was fortunate to be a part of the production of Live n Kickin featuring the High Energy Performance of Dexter Morph Ihnen and his incredible crew of dancers and special effects.. little did I know that he would take the video and and make it in to an incredible Mixed Reality Music Video that I did get to see and just could not wait to share with you all.  I was delighted to find out Dexter would  have the World Wide debut on Tonight Live With Paisley Beebe a couple of weeks ago and finally I can talk about it  show clips and just have fun with it without having to keep it a secret  (like I had to before the debut)  so here is a teaser clip that is now on YouTube …

1st life My mission for the next several weeks.. and months

If you happened to read the post just before this one you saw that I am currently on a trip, pretty much around the world.

I am fortunate to be able to take this trip for a few reasons the first one being that I have a perfectly good kidney. Not very long ago I had a dying kidney and required dialysis every few days.   This made it difficult for me to travel even within the same state I live in.

With my blood type it was going to be a 3 to 7 year average wait for a kidney had I not found out about a kidney donor/recipient  exchange program in the United States that paired my brother who was not a close enough match for me.. with another recipient who was a close enough match to him,  whose donor didnt match them but matched me perfectly.  In other words my brother donated one of his kidneys to someone else and because of that I got a kidney and can live a normal life again.

I am one of the lucky ones.  A few days before I left on this trip I had a long conversation with my Nephrologist (kidney Dr) who told me that of the 450 or so renal patient load he carries about about 70 of them die each year after an average of 6 to 10 years on dialysis.. from the many complications that inherently come from this life sustaining treatment method.

Since my transplant and the successfull recovery of all four patients involved my Doctor has become an advocate of the idea of a worldwide database that could potentially save hundreds of thousands of lives if only we were all matched with our information in databases that could be accessed by medical professionals all over the world.

Once a  set of matches is made (which could literally happen in a matter of  hours or even minuets).. Arrangements are made and all four or even six people are brought to a hospital for the transplant exchanges all on the same day.

As I write this my Doctor is putting me in touch, connecting my brother and I with people in cities that we plan to visit on this trip to talk about our experience..  to try create dialog among hospitals, politicians, or anyone who will listen to push for a change that will allow for better global co-operation that hopefully one day people all over the world with kidney failure wont have to go thru dialysis and eventually an early death because of it.

I am journaling everything that happens on this trip.. the good and the bad.. I plan to take lots of photos.. of the good and the bad.  I plan to (probably self publish) my story.   I dont plan to share  this story here on a daily basis but when I do publish it I will share the pictures and stories with anyone who wants  to see them.  I will only ask in exchange for a copy you donate to an organization called  “Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes ~ KDIGO

Another reason I am able to go on this trip is that my brother and a friend have started up a private air charter service and instead of ferrying or shipping the 1st of  a few aircraft they purchased from a  Swiss manufacturer directly to the U.S, They were able to take delivery in Europe where the range of the aircraft will allow us to access many parts of the world before we return to the USA.

My brother will be writing a  company training manual for this aircraft as we travel while also showing his children who he is home schooling different parts of the world.

When he asked me to come along I thought long and hard about it.. I said yes, but with a few conditions..  I needed to take advantage of an opportunity to do some good in the world. He and his partner agreed to help me.. even to the extent of allowing some of their aircraft to be used for (any kind of transplant flights) during non booked periods.  🙂

Yes I know,  I am just as important as a  grain of sand on a beach,  But I also know that just one person can make a difference,  and even if I fail, at least I will know that I tried.

Here is a story about one such person,  “Shay Kelly”  of Project 50/50 who has been an inspiration to me more than she will ever know.

Music sooths.. (1st life and the up and down all around stress rollercoaster)

Over the last several weeks I have been running around like a chicken with her head cut off.  Well let me back up.  A couple of months ago , sadly my sister-in-law passed away in a tragic car accident back in Hawaii.  After going there (from California) the same day as the accident and helping my brother and his two children 7 and 10 yrs old with the arrangements. etc.. after the funeral.  Noticing that there was a deep sadness and void around the house I told my brother.. ( who is ten years older than I) ” Come back  to California with me.  Stay with me a while.  I have to be closer to my work so I can’t stay here but you guys come at least until school starts again  let your minds rest..  You don’t need to be here where everything around you reminds you and the kids of her,  thinking of her and missing her so bad every day.  ”  I was happy to hear him say to me..’ yes.  We will come with you”

I have never had kids of my own and and little did I realize the journey I was about to take part in.  (I’m a fanatic for a clean house.. kids make messes.  That s thier job!  I love them as if they were my own and I knew this is what I needed to do for them and I knew I was doing the right thing..and still am.  But I had no idea how stressfull it can be to be helping to raise two  even well behaved children.  I dont mind doing it.   I love my family..  (My brother and his two kids are the closest family I have. Our parents have been gone for over 10 years now.     more after the break..
